Director of Financial Planning and Analysis
Company Overview
Cambrian Bio is a clinical-stage drug development company focused on building therapeutics to treat and ultimately prevent some of today’s most debilitating chronic diseases, including platforms targeting critical metabolic pathways that decline with age such as AMPK, mitochondrial activation, and MTOR.
Cambrian is advancing programs from early clinical development through value creating inflection points. As the organization enters its next phase of growth, the Finance function is expanding to support increasing operational complexity, enhanced financial rigor, and scalable infrastructure.
Position Overview
Cambrian is seeking a Director of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) to serve as a hands-on finance partner to R&D and program teams, with a primary focus on clinical-stage financial planning, trial design support, and scenario modeling. This individual will play a critical role in strengthening financial planning capabilities as Cambrian scales its clinical programs and organizational footprint, while supporting clinical decision-making from the earliest stages of trial design through execution, ensuring financial insight is embedded in program planning and capital allocation decisions.
The Director, FP&A will report to the finance function and partner closely with the CFO, R&D leadership, clinical teams, and platform teams. This role will own consolidated budgeting and forecasting processes, program-level financial planning and scenario modeling, support clinical trial design and execution, and contribute to the development of scalable financial processes aligned with increasing governance and reporting expectations.
Given Cambrian’s size and growth trajectory, this role requires a strong foundation in biotech FP&A, direct experience supporting clinical trial design, comfort operating in a hands-on environment, and the ability to flex between strategic forecasting, operational budgeting, real-time partnership with scientific stakeholders, and selected accounting or process support as needed.
Responsibilities
Clinical FP&A and Trial Design Partnership
- Partner directly with R&D and clinical teams during the design phase of clinical trials, providing financial input on protocol decisions, trial structure, sequencing, and timelines.
- Develop scenario models tied to trial design choices, including number of arms, enrollment assumptions, timeline tradeoffs, and downstream cash flow impact.
- Embed with program teams early to assess financial risk, tradeoffs, and decision points rather than reacting to finalized budgets.
- Support capital allocation decisions across programs based on clinical strategy, risk profile, and runway implications.
Financial Planning & Forecasting
- Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual budgeting and forecasting processes across Cambrian and its portfolio platforms.
- Develop and maintain robust financial models to support long-range planning, cash runway analysis, and clinical and program level scenario modeling.
- Prepare budget-to-actual variance analyses and provide structured reporting to executive leadership.
- Partner closely with the accounting leadership to integrate monthly close results into updated forecasts and management reporting.
- Enhance forecasting rigor, documentation, and review processes to support a maturing finance function.
- Support finance leadership in maintaining financial models that incorporate equity planning assumptions, including option pool utilization, dilution analysis, and cap table impacts, in coordination with Legal and external advisors as appropriate.
R&D and Program Budgeting
- Partner with R&D and platform leaders to develop detailed program-level budgets, including preclinical, IND-enabling, and early clinical activities.
- Work with scientific and operational stakeholders to understand cost drivers, vendor contracts, and development timelines.
- Proactively assess financial implications of changes in trial design, scope, or sequencing.
- Track program spend against milestones and anticipate risks and adjustments before they materialize in spend.
- Review vendor and CRO agreements from a financial perspective to assess payment schedules, milestone structures, termination provisions, and other cost-related terms that impact cash flow and forecasting.
- Support cross-functional planning efforts as development activities increase in scope and complexity.
Financial Infrastructure & External Interface
- Support finance leadership in strengthening processes aligned with increasing organizational scale and external stakeholder expectations.
- Assist in preparation of forward-looking financial materials and executive-level reporting analyses.
- Interface with external advisors (e.g., audit and consulting partners) as needed to support financial planning inputs and documentation.
- Contribute to building scalable planning tools, review workflows, and documentation standards.
Controls, Process, and Cross-Functional Support
- Support development of scalable financial processes aligned with a strengthening control environment.
- Participate in approval workflows and review processes to enhance segregation of duties and documentation rigor.
- Collaborate with accounting, operations, and external consultants to respond to information requests efficiently.
- Contribute to special projects across the finance function in a high-growth, resource-conscious environment.
